Ferrari 458 Italia

So I finally got a go in this absolute monster! Ferrari really do make some special cars. The 458 being one of their best looking.

Introduced in 2010, the Ferrari 458 Italia was a replacement for the F430. It was designed originally as a Berlinetta by Pininfarnia, but a Spider version was unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. It has a 4.5litre V8 producing 560bhp. It has an mpg of…. Nevermind.

So, I know the guy who owns this. We were at a car meet on Sunday and we just got talking about cars and whatnot. I had mentioned to him that I hadn’t seen the 458 around at all and he was quite surprised seeing as we both live near each other. He then suggested that I come and see it in the flesh rather than just be drooling over pictures. We agreed a time and place and that was that. I was pretty chuffed leaving the meet knowing I was going to see a real 458. It mightn’t seem much to some people but I was very excited. I hopped in my boring old Avensis on Monday afternoon and went to meet him. For the sake of this post I will call him Colm.
This was the first sight I saw:
I just laughed. Nobody would have thought there was a 560bhp super car sitting in a car park down a quiet lane in Dublin’s city centre.DSC_0470

I was pleasantly surprised at how  well it coped on the inner city streets. Of course you could feel every bump in the road but it wasn’t uncomfortable. Even the speed ramps weren’t a problem.

Put the gearbox into automatic mode and you wouldn’t even know you’re driving something so special. Colm even described it as boring. Just your average, everyday cruiser. But then stick it into race or sport mode and a whole different beast comes alive. Gearshifts are very quick and the acceleration is just unbelievable.

You won’t understand the term “head turner” until you’re in an Italian super car driving around Dublin. Literally everybody looked at the car. Colm was even saying that he was going to get the front windows tinted a bit because he felt a bit too exposed!

I don’t really know what else to say about the car. It was my first real experience of a proper super car. They are something to behold, really. What makes this car even more special is that it is the only Ferrari 458 Italia registered in the Republic of Ireland. There are lots of 360’s, classic Ferarris and even a few F430’s but nothing comes close to this.

I have a video on the Facebook page here:
